Prof Stephen Bernard
Professor Stephen Bernard is an Intensive Care Specialist at The Victorian Heart Hospital and at The Alfred and is Director of Intensive Care at Knox Private Hospital. He is a Medical Advisor to Ambulance Victoria.
He was a Chief Investigator in three recent large clinical trials funded by the NHMRC. These were: “EXACT” which tested reduction of oxygen administration after resuscitation from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (published JAMA Oct 2022), “PATCH” which tested the role of tranexamic acid in severe trauma (published NEJM 2023), and “TAME” which tested therapeutic hypercapnea in the ICU after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (published NEJM 2023).
He is involved in the currently enrolling LOGICAL trial which tests higher versus lower oxygen in the ICU after cardiac arrest and the planned STEPCARE trial which will compare higher/ lower blood pressure, higher lower temperature and more/ less sedation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients.
